What is the most important thing I need to check before considering an addition to any building or the start of a new building?

You must obtain a Building Permit application from the Selectmen’s office (or you can download a copy from the 'Documents' section of this website at http://www.stoddardnh.org/official-documents/building-permit-application), complete and sign the application, and return it to the Selectmen's office.  The Selectmen will then forward the permit to the Compliance Officer for his review.  The Compliance Officer then submits the permit to the Board of Selectmen and they have 14 days to approve or disapprove of the permit.  You should check the Stoddard Community Planning Ordinances which are available at the 'Documents' section of this website, especially for setback requirements from lot lines and any public waters.  You should also check the NH Shoreland Protection Act which is also available at the 'Documents' section of this website.  If you have any questions, you may contact the Compliance Officer at phone # 446 7778 or the Board of the Selectmen.

How do I obtain a building permit?

A Building Permit is obtained from the Selectmens office.  The Selectmen's Administrative Assistant Hours are Wednesday & Friday from 10:30am to 2:30 pm   You may also download a Building Permit Application form from the documents section of this website.

What is accepted at the Stoddard Recycling and Transfer Station?

All personal waste is accepted at the transfer station, except harmful products such as toxic materials, pesticides, etc. (these must be taken to the Keene transfer station).  Cans & bottles, newspapers, cardboard, metal (fridges, etc.), computer parts and TVs, tires, must be placed in separate dumpsters at the transfer station.   As from the May 2008 Town Meeting, building contractors are prohibited from bringing construction debris to the transfer station.  They are encouraged to obtain their own dumpsters at the construction site.

May I burn brush or kindling on my property?
Permits are required by law for any type of outdoor fire.  Permits may be obtained from one of the Forest Fire Wardens.  The only fires that do not require a burn permit are gas and charcoal grills, and wood-type stoves that are fully enclosed with a stack and a spark arrestor.  Rubbish and trash can not be burned.  It can only be disposed of at the Stoddard Transfer Station.
